According to the provisions of Law 42, under subsection 3 of the Laws of Cricket, the ball may be polished without the use of an artificial substance, but it can be dried with a towel if it is wet, and have mud removed from it under supervision other than these actions all other actions which alter the condition of the ball are believed to be illegal. Furthermore, steps required to rub the ball on the ground, scuffing with a fingernail or other sharp object, or tampering with the seam of the ball also leads to ball tampering.

It also involved highly publicized infighting in the Indian cricket team between the then newly appointed Coach Greg Chappell and the then Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly. The dispute resulted in the removal of Ganguly as captain of Indian Cricket team which ultimately led to his replacement by Vice-captain Rahul Dravid in November 2005, and Ganguly being dropped from the ODI team.
